Description
Ocean Girl, in her dark, fragile presence, seems to hover between a toxic wild landscape and a playful sea of creatures. Her role as the central figure in this painting seems to make her timid and anxious, and so she attempts to distract the viewer by washing her hair, a rather useless act for a mermaid. But why so nervous, when she is the Magic of her World, the Power of the Sea. Ocean Girl is a painting that draws on the problematic representation of women in our children's literature and fairytales.
