In this garden binary categories such as growth and decay merge inextricably in tense contrasts

Description

Who doesn't long for paradise? According to the story of Adam and Eve, the world should have been free of death and suffering – but then the first humans became sinful and have since been denied access to the Garden of Eden. This myth is almost as old as human civilization and is considered the most powerful of all human myths. Tirza Matter accuses it and its countless depictions of supporting a binary worldview and thus justifying categorization and exclusion.

In search of new images, she now paints gardens in which binary categories such as growth and decay merge inextricably in tense contrasts. Characteristic motifs such as mushroom-like structures, primordial creatures, entrails, and blood vessels repeatedly emerge from her dreamy and multi-layered oil paintings.

Painting serves her as a form of thought and research. The result is images that are equally fascinating, irritating and intended to stimulate reflection on rigid categories such as good and evil.
