Albrecht/Wilke | Alwine Baresch | Wolfgang Ellenrieder | Eunjeong Kim | Andreas Linke
With “KALTE PLATTE,” the gopea art space presents a new exhibition format: For the first time, works by one of the teachers from the art colleges and academies collaborating with the gopea funding project will be shown alongside works by former students. Wolfgang Ellenrieder, Professor of Painting and Drawing at the Braunschweig Academy of Fine Arts since 2010, has invited the artist duo Albrecht/Wilke (Berlin, gopea class of 2017), Alwine Baresch (Braunschweig), Eunjeong Kim (Duisburg), and Andreas Linke (Leipzig, gopea class of 2019) to exhibit with him. The ironic title “KALTE PLATTE” refers to the diverse range of painterly delicacies offered at the gopea art space, like a mixed buffet. Wolfgang Ellenrieder presents works in which contrasting painterly elements collide, such as geometric abstractions enriched with surprisingly illusionistic, eye-deceptive elements. Albrecht/Wilke ironize aspects of today’s food (and lack of it) culture with unusual motifs such as Hawaiian toast, currywurst, and mustard packets in a pop-surreal way, demonstrating divergent stylistic devices. In her large-format works, Alwine Baresch has devoted herself entirely to the subject of semi-abstract, vibrantly colored landscapes that blend real and fictional elements in a process-like manner. Eunjeong Kim, with her emphatically artificial motifs and colors, references pop cultural codes as well as the aesthetics of digital image processing and image distortion, expanding analogue painting into the virtual (keyword: AR: augmented reality). Andreas Linke counters all of this with emphatically objective and concrete color fields, painterly articulations of color, color effects, and color contrasts. The result is a varied and exciting journey through the broad range of possibilities of contemporary painting.
